Sketch Life 01

Being an architect, I tend to gravitate towards art in whatever form it is.

My two favourites are photography and sketching.
I must mention, however, that I’m not a professional in both. I am a self taught amateur photographer and sketch artist.

I use my mobile phone to take pictures and sketch during my free time. My sketches range from abstract pieces and doodles, to those of celebrities and prominent people. They are not perfect by any means, some turn out really great and some are just pathetic attempts at procrastination. For example, my Bob Marley sketch has to be the best sketch I’ve done! But Malaika Firth and Jhene Aiko didn’t turn out too well, but I love the end result all the same!

Recently, I’ve been meaning to buy myself a painting kit and start experimenting with oil paints, but these things are expensive man! ๐Ÿ˜€
Note: Winsor and Newton products are the best for anyone who wishes to pursue art.
So until I can afford to buy myself the painting material, I’ll stick to my photos and sketches (Mama and dad I hope y’all are reading this because I’ve been saying this for months).
Or you, my readers, can help me buy my paints by purchasing some of my pieces ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€
Way to market myself huh? It is my blog after all hehe

I’ll share more of my photos in the next post in’shaa’Allah ๐Ÿ™‚
Wishing you all a lovely week!

PS. What do you think of the new Google Nexus 6? From reviews I’ve read and watched, it seems like a better device than it’s predecessor (which is AMAZING) but I’m a little worried about the size.
If any of my readers is lucky enough to own the device, please leave a comment below on what you think of it!

Desired Things

If the title of this post made you expect a wish list of sorts, you have been misled.
Desiderata (“desired things” in Latin), ย is a poem by Max Ehrmann, and the last line carries the weight of the whole poem (pun intended).
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy this week and every other week. ๐Ÿ™‚

I Stand Alone

“Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.”

Truth and Beauty.

Everyone appreciates Truth and Beauty, but both are understood almost entirely differently amongst us.
This blog will be my way of expressing Truth and appreciating Beauty.

I do not need to explain myself to anyone. My intentions and actions are as a result of either impulse (like my blog, it may have felt right at the moment so I did it) and sometimes a well thought out plan.
Nevertheless, I will explain why I decided to embark on this journey. Yes, blogging seems like a journey to me for I don’t know my destination, but I hope I’m heading towards self expression and growth.

The past year, 2013, has been a roller coaster ride for me. Funny I should use this reference as I’ve never been on one before.ย I am a Kenyan girl, born and raised in the capital city of this beautiful nation, Nairobi. It would be a lie to say that I have explored this city to it’s fullest. My parents are good people, and practicing Muslims, and so am I. They have always been overprotective of me since a very young age. I am now 23 years old, and they still see me as their little girl.
‘When I gave birth to you, you were so tiny I was scared I’d break you,’ Mama always says. Butย I’ll bore you with these details in good time.

So much has changed in my life, but more profoundly my perspective on life. And well, I now have a blog! ๐Ÿ˜€
I’llย share my story with you, for however long I can, in hopes of putting a smile on your face, or at least teaching you something you didn’t know before.
I’m not a great writer, but it’s something I aspire to become. Bear with me until then ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve been racking my brain on what my first post would be for quite a while now, and I think I have the perfect piece.
My dear readers, I share with you ‘Beauty’, a poem by Moshe Safdie. It HADย to be something architecture related, I mean it’s only fair. I am an architect after all, or am I not?

Lots of love, Fatma XX

He who seeks Truth
Shall find Beauty

He who seeks Beauty
Shall find Vanity

He who seeks Order
Shall find Gratification

He who seeks Gratification
Shall be Disappointed

He who considers himself as the servant of his fellow being
Shall find the joy of Self-Expression

He who seeks Self-Expression
Shall fall into the pit of Arrogance

Arrogance is incompatible with nature
Thru the nature of the universe
and the nature of man
we shall seek Truth

If we seek truth we shall find Beauty
